San Gabriel Castle

Castillo de San Gabriel, Lanzarote, Islas CanariasIt was built between 1571 and 1573 to defend the island from attacks by pirates and moriscos. One of the most important attacks recorded was in 1585 when the pirate Morato Arráez burnt the castle down. This is why Felipe II ordered a new castle to be built with a walkway made of stone and a drawbridge which connected the castle to Arrecife. In 1972 the castle was restored and converted into the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum which we can enjoy today.

San José Castle – International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC)

Castillo de San José, Lanzarote, Islas CanariasKing Charlles III had this castle built between 1771 and 1779 to defend Lanzarote from pirates. It is also known as the ' Fort of Hunger' because at that time , Lanzarote's economy was going through a serious crisis and the construction of the castle created work and eased the poverty of that time. In 1976 it opened as the International Museum of Contemporary Art. Today it has a wide collection of works of art and is administered by the local government in Lanzarote.

Santa Bárbara / Guanapay Castle

Castillo de Santa Báarbara, Lanzarote, Islas CanariasSanta Bárbara Castle was built by Sancho de Herrera in order to keep watch on the coast. On the orders of Felipe II, the engineer Leonardo Torriani reinforced the structure of the fort, making it easier to defend.Over the years the castle fell into decay and was restored, finally converting it into the present day Museum of Canarian Emigration.

Spínola Palace House Museum

The Aeronautics Museum in the Airport

Museo Aeronáutico, Lanzarote, Islas CanariasThis museum can be found in the former passenger terminal in Lanzarote airport. The museum contains a mural painted by the Belgian artist Jean P Hock and a copy of the 1953 César Manrique work of art 'Lanzarote' done in acrylic. It is well worth visiting both the communications room and the meteorological room in the airport.

San Francisco Convent

Convento de San Francisco, Teguise, Lanzarote, Islas CanariasThis convent only preserves its chuch which is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Miraflores ( Our Lady Miraflores). Gonzalo Argote had the convent built to fulfill the last wishes of Sancho Herrera who,in his will, stated that he wanted to build a convent in Famara. In 1588 Gonzalo Argote built San Francisco Convent which was the first on the island. The inside of the convent consists of two naves separated by several toral arches. There are three alterpieces, two built in a barroc style, one of which can be found in the centre nave and another one built in white stone in the small chapel on the left . Nowadays the convent is the Museum of Sacred Art.

El Almacén Cultural Centre

Centro Insular de Cultura El Almacen, LanzaroteThis is a typical 19th century building. In the past it was a large family house situated right in the centre of Arrecife. Like the majority of buildings at that time, the house was constructed around a central patio which was connected to all the rooms of the house as well as the store room.

Later, El Almacén became a multi purpose centre which included an art gallery (El Aljibe), a library, a small theatre, a language school, a bar/restaurant, a shop selling music , crafts and local pottery as well as many other things.
The local government finally acquired the Almacén and following several changes it became the Department of Education and Culture. Nowadays, El Almacén is the administrative centre for the department of culture on the island and is part of the local government.
